US Sports Betting Boom Sparks Concerns Over Player Behaviour
Online sports betting continues to surge across the United States, with more players joining platforms each year. However, alongside this growth, concerns around player behaviour and the need for stronger regulation are becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.
Rising Participation Signals Strong Market Growth
Sports betting participation in the US is climbing steadily, according to recent research from the Siena Research Institute and St. Bonaventure University. Around 27% of Americans now hold an active online betting account, with the figure rising sharply to 52% among men aged 18 to 49.
This marks clear progress compared to previous years. Participation stood at 22% in 2025 and just 19% in 2024, highlighting how quickly the market is expanding. Notably, 83% of account holders actively place bets, showing that engagement levels remain consistently high.
The data paints a clear picture: sports betting is becoming a mainstream activity, particularly among younger male audiences who continue to drive growth in the sector.
Chasing Losses and Risky Behaviour on the Rise
Growth in betting activity is being matched by an increase in risky habits, raising red flags across the industry. More than half of bettors (60%) admitted to chasing losses in an attempt to recover money, a behaviour widely associated with problem gambling.
While most users still view betting as entertainment, the line is becoming blurred for some. A significant 85% said they placed bets believing they could make money, while 83% favoured high-risk wagers such as parlays and futures with larger potential returns.
Spending patterns are also shifting. A growing number of bettors are wagering higher amounts, with 63% reporting stakes of $100 or more in a single day. Meanwhile, 31% said they had been confronted about their betting habits, and 27% admitted to misrepresenting their activity.
Emotional responses further underline the issue. Around 42% acknowledged betting more than they should, while 43% reported feelings of guilt after losses. Encouragingly, 15% have sought help through helplines or support services, signalling rising awareness of responsible gambling.
Public Push for Stronger Regulation
Despite widespread acceptance, Americans are calling for tighter controls, reflecting growing concern over the impact of online betting. Half of respondents support legal sports betting nationwide, yet a larger majority wants stricter oversight.
Around 67% favour aggressive federal regulation to protect players, while 74% believe allowing 18-year-olds to bet is problematic. Advertising is another key concern, with 53% supporting a ban on sportsbook promotions during live broadcasts.
Concerns also extend to the integrity of sport. More than half of respondents fear betting could influence outcomes, while recent rule changes allowing certain individuals to bet on professional sports have been met with scepticism.
The findings suggest a complex relationship: betting is popular, but trust in its long-term impact remains fragile.
Prediction Markets Enter the Spotlight
Interest in prediction markets is also gaining traction, with 15% of Americans having placed bets on platforms like Polymarket and Kalshi. Among avid sports fans, that figure rises significantly.
However, the appetite for regulation remains consistent. Around 65% of respondents believe prediction markets should be regulated in the same way as traditional sports betting, reinforcing the broader demand for oversight across emerging betting formats.
A Market at a Crossroads
The US sports betting landscape is evolving at a pace, driven by strong adoption and increasing accessibility. Yet, with growth comes responsibility. Rising participation, combined with signs of problematic behaviour, is pushing regulation to the forefront of the conversation.
Balancing innovation with player protection will be key. As betting becomes more embedded in everyday life, the demand for clear safeguards is only set to grow.
